* Anna Durand is an award-winning romance writer specializing in steamy romances populated with spunky heroines and hunky heroes, in settings as diverse as modern Chicago and the fairy realm. Her romances have to date won eight awards and her novel Intuition was a 2016 RONE Award nominee, while her short story Tempted by a Kiss was a finalist in The Romance Reviews 2016 Readers’ Choice Awards. Anna also maintains a blog, Spunk & Hunks, where she writes her own articles and reviews romance books, as well as hosting wonderful guest authors.

Today Anna Durand will be talking about the best piece of writing advice she’s ever received and how it helped her.
* The best advice was to just keep writing. If one book doesn’t work, if it doesn’t find an audience, another one just might. I can’t remember where that advice came from, but it has stuck with me and encouraged me to keep plugging. “Keep writing” doesn’t have to mean write a fast or write five books a year. It simply means you keep working—try new genres, experiment with new kinds of stories, continue growing as a writer.
* Even as a published writer, you need to be willing to try new things. You never know what might hit a chord with readers. I resisted branching out into erotic romance, even though I love reading smoking-hot stories, but when I finally took the risk it paid off for me. My first erotic romance, the short story Tempted by a Kiss, became my best-reviewed book. Now, with Dangerous in a Kilt, I’ve gone full tilt into the subgenre with no regrets.
* And yep, I plan to just keep on writing!

* Cliff smiled. “Morning, neighbor.”
* Stonewashed blue jeans hugged his hips and another tight T-shirt, this time jade green, stretched over his chiseled chest. The leash fell from my hand.
* Casey flung his front paws onto Cliff’s thighs. The man I’d kissed last night scratched my dog behind the ears. Casey, ebullient at the attention, licked Cliff’s arm.
* My fantasy Highlander’s smile faltered. “Aren’t you happy to see me?”
* Happy? Seriously? I snagged Casey’s collar and dragged him away from Cliff. “Are you stalking me?”
* “Stalking?” He scratched his cheek. “I thought to follow you last night to make sure you were all right, but you took off so bloody fast. Might not believe it, but I am an honorable man.”
* A panicked laugh hiccupped out of me. “Honorable? Stalking is a crime, buddy.”
* My terrifying guard dog hopped up and down on his front feet, his tongue lolling.
* “Erica.” Cliff raised his hands, palms out. “I’m trying to be friendly.”
* “Go creep out some other random girl you hunted down online.” I pushed Casey out of the doorway with my foot and pulled the door halfway closed. “Leave me alone, Cliff.”
* I slammed the door. Casey whined.
* “Forget it.” I wagged a finger at him. “Stalkers bad. Dog bite stalkers. Got it? No licking.”
* My Highlander’s voice resounded through the door. “Who the bloody hell is Cliff?”

Welcome to Patrice Locke w/ #RomanticComedy #book ‘Exit Signs’ @patricelocke @GoddessFish

Today we have author Patrice Locke visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?

* As a journalist, Patrice Locke wrote a lot of stories with unhappy and even tragic endings. Facts are facts, and a writer doesn’t mess with facts.
* But fiction is another world. Patrice began writing novels, where she could control the endings and make them as happy as she wants. The best thing about fiction, she says, is having time to think before her characters speak, so they can say the things most of us only come up with after the perfect moment has passed.
* She loves to write, read, and watch romantic comedies where life always turns out the way it should. Her only obsessive relationships are with semicolons and Oxford commas.
* Though she doesn’t like to brag, Patrice is an award-winning artist. She won a gold and diamond watch when she was 13 for decorating a turkey drumstick bone to look like Batman. Alas, that was her last recognition in the fine arts.
* Patrice lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the blue sky is brilliant, the air is thin, and the vistas are breathtaking. She is none of those things, which is one reason she enjoys living among them.

Today Patrice Locke will be talking about the best piece of writing advice she’s received and how it’s helped.
* Listening to writers talk about writing helps.
* “There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.” W. Somerset Maugham
* I cling to that when I start to feel lost or overwhelmed. It’s a comforting idea, and it’s true. The thing I hate most is having someone tell me some random writing rule that they believe must be obeyed upon pain of death. I once had a person in a critique tell me that you can never use the word “that.”
* And a friend told me that she was informed that no book could start with the word “it.” Right. “It was the best of times. It was the worst…” Or “It is a truth universally acknowledged…” Yep. Dickens and Austen should be ashamed of themselves. Hacks.
* I think writing is about expressing thoughts, describing actions, and setting scenes. If you can do those things in a way that keeps someone reading, nobody is going to stop to count the “thats” and “ifs.”
* Writing is about breaking the rules and creating something that’s never been seen before in exactly that way.
* “Read, read, read. Read everything – trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it. Then write. If it’s good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.” William Faulkner
* Perfect. I try to read like a reader and not a writer, though, because that can suck all the enjoyment right off the page. On the other hand, if I’m stopping to rewrite something in my head to avoid the author’s repetition, or if I’m mentally editing out extra verbiage, I have to question whether I ought to keep reading. It all helps me keep my own ‘voice’ and style in check. I don’t want to be the before picture in the ‘don’t let this happen to you’ feature on the craft of writing.
* And, finally: “I hate writing. I like having written.” Dorothy Parker
* That’s me. I can’t wait to get to revising because I never like what happens the first time through. The only problem, of course, is that you have to actually do that dreadful writing to get to the stage where it can be polished into something you can set free in public.
* I think you have to write as if nobody else is going to read it because the inner-editor will never let the ‘good stuff’ out for fear or embarrassment. You have to hold up the mirror and figure out a way to like what you see there.

* Tracy Price has a documentary-style life until rockstar Jesse Elliot rewrites her script and takes the wheel to drive her crazy.
* In her quest to find a writer missing since the 1930’s, Tracy thinks she has discovered exactly how to handle her new relationship. But she may be listening to the wrong voice.
* Then Tracy and Jesse find out they’ve both been keeping some big secrets, and the truth may ruin everything.
* Will sharing the missing writer’s story open both their hearts?

~ Excerpt ~

* Jesse lunged toward me. It was too late. I had already launched. He reached out but didn’t connect. Instead, I broke the trajectory of my upper body by grabbing him at chest level and sliding down. He was pushed backward into the table, which stabilized our ungainly host-parasite tableau. He softened my landing so that physically I was fine, but my pride was ready for intensive care.
* Heaped at his feet, like a demented penitent, I hugged his knees, my face pressed flat into his thighs. I might as well stay down. What’s worse? To stand up and face you, or remain here, nestled between your legs? What do you think? Then, the finishing touch: I erupted into nervous, snorting laughter. He guessed there was no serious injury.
* “It’s nice to see you, too. You are okay, aren’t you? Can you stand?” He reached for my arms to unwrap them from his legs and help me up. I jammed my eyelids together to conjure up a do-over, but no such luck.
* I would have to deal with it.
* He held my elbows in his hands. “I guess we were both in a hurry to see each other.”
* I do appreciate your attempt to lighten the mood, but you are standing SO close. I can feel your body heat. Or is that mine? By the way, you smell tart and fresh, like a lime.
* I stared at his shoulder. My dignity meter was stuck on empty.
* “Enthusiastic greeting. Thanks for that.” He was blatantly amused.
* “It was nothing.” I stepped backward to regain a semblance of independence. Don’t mock me. But, you did go to all the trouble to bring your hair. And your eyes. I might forgive you for witnessing my disgrace. That hair.

Welcome to Vella Munn w/ #ContemporaryRomance ‘His Montana Rescue’ @GoddessFish

Today we have author Vella Munn visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
mediakit_authorphoto_hismontanarescue-copy

* Vella Munn freely admits to being a dedicated and sometimes demented fiction writer. She has always been drawn to nature and those who feel at home in it. A career writer, she has had way over 60 books published, most of them romances both past and present. As far as personal statistics go, she has one husband, two sons, four grandchildren, and is owned by two rescue dogs. Home is southern Oregon within a two hour drive of Crater Lake. She frequently visits Montana in her mind and heart.

Today Vella Munn will be talking about a book she read that had a big impact on her.
* Oh my goodness, that’s like asking a multi-published writer which of his or her works brought him/her the most satisfaction. Like most writers, I read a lot when I was growing up. My mother was a teacher, and we lived in a remote area without TV reception so fiction became my entertainment. I was drawn to adventure books, often about sports, written for boys and read every title the county library periodically loaned to our school. My mother didn’t try to push me toward ‘girls’ books for which I’m grateful.
* But the book with the greatest impact wasn’t fiction. It was nonfiction listing of the publications that accepted writing from freelancers. My uncle gave me this yearly collection one Christmas, and I have a vivid memory of stretching out on my stomach on the bed at my in-laws’ house pouring through the exciting possibilities and making notes. It was called something like Writer’s Yearbook and I bought my own updated copy for years after. I think a version is still available, but now if I’m looking for information about a new publication, I either Google or ask my writer friends for feedback.
* That said, I’ll always be grateful to my uncle for opening my eyes to the publishing world.

* Former firefighter Echo Rose may have recovered from the injuries that nearly ended her life but the emotional scars still linger. She now devotes herself to protecting wildlife and sheltering her heart until local contractor Rey Bowen reminds Echo that life can offer so much more.
* Rey Bowen is not the only one at Lake Serene with secrets and a desire to reboot his seriously derailed life. Meeting Echo reminds him that life can sparkle with joy and laughter and passion, but can he show the cautious Echo how to love again even as he struggles to trust his own heart?

~ Excerpt ~

* “I’m under pressures you’ll never understand,” he said so softly she had to strain to hear. “Pressure that goes much deeper than being able to bring in roofing trusses.”
* Both fascinated by what he hadn’t said and determined not to go beneath the surface with the big, distant man, she started back toward her vehicle.
* “We all do what we have to,” she said over her shoulder. “Priorities that drive us. I’ll leave a printout with you so you know exactly what you can and can’t do until the restrictions are lifted.”
* “Who made up those rules?”
* She was tempted to counter that the rules hadn’t been fashioned out of thin air as he seemed to be indicating but that wouldn’t get them anywhere. For as long as Rey and she were at Lake Serene, they’d have to work together. She had no control over how he handled his side of the relationship, but she intended to be as professional as possible.
* Professional?
* Easier said than done, because he’d joined her and was matching his stride to hers, his arm occasionally brushing hers. Touching her in ways she’d nearly forgotten were possible. Reminding her she was a woman.
* She started to put distance between them but was distracted by what might be the chipmunk she’d seen earlier. Its life could depend on what she said today.
* “Your employee can’t smoke outside,” she told Rey as they neared the cabin with the cigarette-smoking workman now standing in the doorway.
* “That’s one of the regulations.”
* He stopped, gave her no choice but to face him. “That goes without saying. I’m not an idiot.”
