A look into Destiny Happened in the Down and Dirty anthology

~ Blurb ~

Desi
* Of course, I noticed Mr. Shirtless. With a bod like his, who wouldn’t? But his hot-factor didn’t matter. What did? My asshat ex and the need to make him jealous. So, I strolled up to the panty-melting stranger as though I knew him and laid one on him, hoping said asshat would see I’d moved on just fine without him. Only, he never saw me kissing another man.
Kash
* I spotted her—honey-blonde hair gleaming in the sun as she came my way. I’d flirt. Smile. Maybe get her number. I sure the hell didn’t expect her to toss her arms around my neck, mashing her body against mine, and kiss the ever-loving shit out of me. Then, she stopped. Stepped back. Blushed. Whispered “Sorry” and blended into the crowd.
* I never got her name that day. Or her number. However, fate had other plans and Destiny happened…again.

~ Excerpt ~

Desi
* “Stupid, stupid, stupid…”
* My breathless mutterings were meant for no one but me. Because seriously, I was stupid. Look up the word in the dictionary and you’d see a big ol’ picture of my dumb face. I’d just kissed a stranger and ran. A ‘kiss and run’ if you will. Not only was I stupid, but I might also be insane. Like, total zonkers!
* Why did I do what I did?
* Okay. The why was simple. Or, at least, I thought it was at the time. I wanted to make my ex jealous. Show the douche-canoe I’d moved on just fine without his no good ass. Let him know he’d been easy to forget. Prove I was so over him, it wasn’t even funny.
* You’re probably thinking the ex? Let me back up a bit.
* When a group of Oktoberfester’s shifted, most of them watching the hip-wiggle/ass-jiggle Linds was doing, someone started catcalling. This had me looking in the direction of the whistles, and that’s when I became aware of Mr. Shirtless. With the chiseled cheekbones of a Greek God, he stood a few feet away in low-slung denim—glistening in the sun.
* Hello! With a rock-hard bod like his, who wouldn’t notice?
* I’m pretty sure he hadn’t been the whistler, but I was certain he had been watching Lindy. Then his gaze slid to me as I took him in. Honestly, the man’s abs alone should be bronzed. It was like I’d stepped into one of those hot guy calendar shoots, his more than a six-pack rippling.
* And did I mention glistening? I think I did, but it’s worth mentioning again.
* That man’s midsection with the V-cut was enough to bring a grown woman to her knees in adoration. But just as I was about to stop myself from gawping at all those large, well-defined muscles flexing as the tall, dark-haired hottie wiped sweat from his bare chest, someone else redirected my attention.
* Jenner.
* Of all the places the asshat could be, there he was, mixed in with a group to Mr. Shirtless’s left! He shouldn’t have mattered. I shouldn’t have allowed the sight of him to burrow under my skin, but there was no helping it. Jenner had his arm curled around the shoulders of that woman as they strolled along a line of vendors—she smiling up at him all happy while he winked down at her.
* Heat, and not from the sun, prickled along the back of my neck.
* Seeing them out together—him more attentive to her than he’d ever been with me—pissed me the hell off. Thus, I made a rash decision and did something completely nuts. I strolled up to Mr. Shirtless like I knew him and laid one on him.
* Or maybe he laid one on me.
* Either way, we kissed. Hard. With tongue. And he smelled good. Clean sweat and something a bit caramel-spiced. And the way my stranger pulled me into him—alpha male possessive—God help me. Though, the real ‘holy wow’ moment came when I realized the man had developed an impressive erection while thrusting his tongue against mine, and he wasn’t afraid to use it.
* Truth here. Stranger or not, when he pressed himself against me—hard and commanding—lightning struck my core.
* Let’s just say, lip-locking with Mr. Shirtless had been, well… kind of mind-blowing. And after, when he looked into my eyes—his the color of chocolate swirled with honey gold—I think I lost my ability to breathe.
* Then, Bam! Reality hit me.
* Not only had I made a complete and total fool of myself, but my spur-of-the-moment decision hadn’t worked. Jenner and the skank had strolled on by—engrossed in each other. He never noticed me nor my brilliant public display of kissing the lips off another man.
* Slowing to more of a power walk than a run, I glanced around. “Shit!” I’d been so hell-bent to just go, I’d gone in the complete opposite direction of where I’d left Lindy.
* Body jittery with adrenaline, I turned around and started on my way back to her.
* “Hey, babe. There you are.” Lindy strolled up, handed me a strip of chicken teriyaki on a stick, and frowned. “Where did you go? I lost you for a little while.”
* “Jenner,” I said, disgusted. “He’s here.”
* “Is that why you’re all flushed? Did the buttmunch say something to you?”
* “No. I kind of strolled up to some random hot guy and kissed him to make the asshole jealous, but he didn’t even notice.”
* Lindy’s eyes went wide. “Say what?”
* With a nod, I spilled. Jenner with the woman. How they looked together. Mr. Shirtless. The PDA. The entire crazy tale.
* When I was done, my bestie grabbed my shirt sleeve. “Show me the guy.”
* “No way.” I shook my head. “I made a complete fool of myself and added to it by running away, Linds. I can’t take you to see him. I’m embarrassed enough as it is.”
* “Come on. We’ll just stroll but keep our distance, and you can point him out.”
* I groaned. “What if he sees me?”
* “We’ll be sneaky.” She tugged at me. “Let’s go.”
* “All right. This way.”
* Being careful not to be noticed, I led Linds over toward Pops Brats, only I didn’t see Mr. Shirtless.
* “He’s not around,” I said.
* “Damn it.” Lindy sounded disappointed.
* And me? Well, I couldn’t be sure if I was relieved my sexy stranger was no longer there or despondent I’d never see him again.

International bestselling author London Saint James’ first installment from Two Hearts, One Soul Duet is the epic tale of abiding love, heart-wrenching loss, and an astonishing bond that will find a way to endure.

Winter Perri never truly understood love until she met Austin Carlyle—the man who would rock her world to its foundations and give her something to believe in. But the night before they were to be married, the fairytale shattered.

Thirteen years later Winter is pulled out of her seclusion only to have a painful past confront her, and when it does, she’s left questioning reality, because the impossible is looking back at her with the face of a destroying angel, and piercing eyes in too familiar shades of blue.

Saturday, the 20th of December at eleven in the morning

Saint Thomas Church

Fifth Avenue, New York

The invitations read in elegant, black script.

I’d graduated from college and just turned twenty-two. Austin was twenty-three. And yes, in just a few weeks, we were having a wedding.

Sitting on the third finger of my left hand stood a three-carat ring with three square-cut diamonds encased by emeralds, with more diamonds embedded in the band. It was more money than should have been spent, but Austin said it was a diamond for every year we had been together and the emeralds matched the color of my eyes.

Who could argue with that?

The night Austin proposed to me was not only a surprise but one of the best nights of my life. He’d taken me to the East Village Theater—something not out of the ordinary—we’d been there many times before. In fact, it was the place he took me on our third date.

What was out of the ordinary? The place was vacant.

Walking in the dim light down the long aisle, passing row after row of empty seats, I glanced up at Austin. “There’s no one here.”

He smiled down at me. “I know.”

“What’s going on?”

As though I’d asked the magic question, one beam of streaming light hit a gold-encrusted table up on the darkened stage and glittered.

I focused on the table. It was part of a stage set I’d seen once, sitting in Juliet’s bedroom when Romeo entered in through her window.

“Is this your way of telling me you’re the lead in a new Romeo and Juliet play?”

Austin chuckled but didn’t answer as he led me up on the stage and over to the table.

On top sat a single pink rose with a dazzling ring shimmering in the light that had been tied to the long green stem with a red silk ribbon.

My hand went to my mouth.

I was speechless and more than likely wide-eyed when Austin picked up the rose, untied the ribbon, took the ring into his hand, bent down upon one knee, then handed me the flower.

With shaking hands I took it.

He quoted a scene from Romeo and Juliet, only he’d said my name not Juliet’s as the sun.

Taking my left hand in his, Austin looked up at me from beneath his long, black lashes with eyes the color of sapphires. “Winter. I’m in love with you. I cannot imagine one day without you in my life, so I was hoping you would do me the honor of becoming my wife. Will you marry me?”

Reacting to the moment, my eyes began to overflow with tears. They streamed down my cheeks, dripped off my chin, and hit my hand in his in a sprinkle of abundant joy.

“Yes,” I said.

Austin placed the ring on my finger and kissed it. “I love you.”

He returned to his feet, his face beaming as I sniffled out, “I-I love you, too.”

A breeze blew into the bedroom from the open balcony doors—crisp and clean. The details of winter lingered with just a hint of spring to come, giving the warm room a punch of coolness as early morning sun slanted across the foot of the bed, highlighting the sheets in disarray.

My gaze shifted over to Cayden, sitting at the writing desk, phone in hand, speaking to someone about his upcoming film shoot. When his current film was done, he would be heading to Vancouver.

Would I be going? I didn’t know.

Leaning my hip against the doorjamb of the bathroom, I watched him, how his body moved—the muscles that flexed in his arm when he picked up a script from the desk. He was quietly confident, his movements fluid. No doubt, Cayden was something to watch even in such mundane things.

So very much like Austin.

Walking quietly out of the bathroom, I went to him, not wishing to disturb him, but desperately wanting to touch the man of my dreams. In many ways, he still seemed unreal to me, as if he were an optical phenomenon that could liquefy into hazy lines of heat and disappear.

With the phone to his ear, Cayden turned and looked at me, his sapphire gaze roaming from the hair piled in a messy bun atop my head, to my bubble-gum-pink-painted toenails before he smiled.

My heart thrummed.

Reaching out, he pulled me onto his lap where I willingly went, and picked up a pen from beside my laptop. Then, he crooked his head, holding the handset to the cordless in place against his shoulder to free his other hand and took a hold of mine.

Curious, I wondered what he was up to.

Cayden turned my hand over, palm side up. Swiped his fingers softly over my palm once. Wrote, I Love U, boldly across it. And then he curled my fingers closed, securing the words tight within the palm of my hand before he moved his hands from mine and took hold of the handset again.

My heart, not to mention my body, felt as if it would explode from the joy those three little words inspired. But the fact he wrote them, tattooed them onto my skin, was simply the sweetest thing he could have done.

“Go ahead and e-mail it. I’ll take a look,” he said to the person on the other end of the phone.

There was a pause. A buzzing followed by another pause.

“Sure. Not a problem,” Cayden replied, motioning for me to get up.

When I did, he adjusted the hard, straight-backed desk chair as well himself, and patted his lap.

Wearing nothing but a towel, I straddled him, chest to chest, and placed my arms around his strong shoulders. “Good?” I mouthed.

He winked his approval.

I played with the ends of his hair, feeling the impressive bulge beneath his designer sweatpants jerk against my bare core.

Blood raced through my veins with a start.

“Yes,” Cayden said into the phone. “I’m planning on it, but we can talk about that later.”

There was another pause, more humming sounds, then one of his hands went to my backside and squeezed. “Okay, thanks,” Cayden said.

He hadn’t been talking to me, but to whoever was on the phone.

“I will. Enjoy your breakfast.” He punched the end button and placed the handset into the receiver on the desk.

“I didn’t mean to disturb your call. I realize it was business,” I said.

“You can ‘disturb’ me anytime, baby.”

Excerpt:

“Wow!”
With a start, I turned in the direction of the smooth, male voice I’d heard.
Some guy was standing perfectly still over by the corner booth. His tall, lean body was casually propped up against the wall. His black jeans were worn, his left knee sticking out a hole, and his steel-toed boots untied—the leather tongue of one boot caught in the bottom fray of his jeans.
My gaze moved from his boots, up the length of him, taking in a black leather bomber jacket overtop another black pull-over hooded sweatshirt. Then came the face shadowed beneath the dark hood.
When my eyes found his, my world shifted. I was overcome by something. A pull maybe. Whatever it was, my heart fluttered and raced like I’d dropped a great distance at a fast rate of speed, turning and flipping my stomach.
As if in slow motion, his arm lifted—hand running over the hood—removing it.
One strand of tousled, pitch-black hair fell over the smooth expanse of his forehead bringing my gaze to his dark brows. They arched over long, black lashes which made the color of his eyes pop. And those eyes, for lack of a better word, were amazing. I wasn’t looking into one shade, but differing shades of blue-gray.
I placed my palm over my swirling stomach as my body shook with the immediate urge to touch him—unsure he was real. He was…beautiful.
His jawline was strong, and his chin was dimpled with a cleft. His cheekbones were high and pronounced and the line of his nose was just a very slight bit from a straight line at the bridge. This fact only made this slightest of imperfections a simple perfection. He looked as though he had been carved—chiseled from the hand of an old master.
When the full shape of his lips turned up into a breathtaking smile, I may have gasped. He had the kind of smile that would make angels envious, or if not envious, they’d surely sing in glory at the sight.
With a dip of his head, he ran his fingers through his hair. I wanted to be his fingers so I could touch him, caress his face, and trace my fingertips over his beautifully etched lips.
I think I forgot how to blink.
Was I even breathing?
My mouth went dry and cottony. All I was capable of hearing was the fast beat of my heart pounding hard in my ears until he laughed a low, even, musical tone. “That was impressive. I thought I might need to step in, but you handled yourself well.”
It took me a moment to process his voice and his words. I was still stuck on the planes and angles of his spectacular face. “Um…I’m sorry, what?”
“What you just did. Those obnoxious men. Impressive.”
“O-oh?” I was still a little muddled in my thoughts, though managed, “They’re world-class jerks.”
The small laugh lines at the corners of his sensual mouth made their startling appearance with that devastating grin of his.
I stared, rather oddly for a moment; pretty sure I was still unblinking.
Get a grip. You’re acting like a total idiot.
The strange silence flustered me for an instant. I needed to say something because he was just looking at me.
Oh, my God. He’s really looking. Say something.
