“Are we here already?” She stirred next to him, digging the heels of her hands into her eyes.
“Yep.” He pulled the car into the driveway of the lake house and parked.
After a long silence, he spoke. “There’re rules, Sarah.”
She sighed. “Of course, there are. Aren’t there always with you?”
He let that go by. “You don’t leave the house without telling me. Not even to go out on the back porch or down to the water.”
“But what will the neighbors think? It is a lake house? If we’re never on the lake, won’t that seem weird?” She waved toward the other houses. All of the houses faced the main road, but the large lots kept them somewhat private. It would have to do for the time being. It wouldn’t be long, a few days at most, before he could safely deliver her where she needed to be.
“They’ll think you’re a good girl who obeys.” He deepened his voice, remembering exactly what that tone did for her. Her pupils dilated, and a soft pink tinted her cheeks. “You remember what happens to bad girls, right, Sarah?”
“What are the other rules?” she asked, ignoring his question.
Well that wouldn’t do.
“Answer me, Sarah.”
She stared at him, her eyes narrowed, lips thinned. “Yes, Jeremy. I remember. But this isn’t then. You aren’t my boyfriend anymore. You aren’t my ow—” She stopped, not saying the word they’d used for his role in their relationship. The secret they kept from their friends who would have thought them miscreants—sexual deviants.
